Strings of Music

At the age of 9, I used to imagine myself as a vocalist and lead guitarist of my own rock band. I always dreamed of what it will be like to become famous and popular.  I was thinking that being in or having a music band means you are special, cool, awesome, and loved by everyone. When in the stage, all eyes and ears are on you. People wanted to hear you music, saying words of praise. They will also looked up on you and even dreamed of becoming like you, able to play different musical instruments, playing, and singing full of confidence.

As I grow older, that dream inspired me to learn how to play the guitar. One of the funny things I remembered was that my fingers were a little short and I couldn’t reach the fret board. When I strummed on the neck of the guitar, my fingers were very numb and painful. That didn’t stop me.  My dream of becoming a lead guitarist drove me to practice more and more.  I even have chipped fingernails and calloused finger pads.

After a year of practicing, I can finally play the guitar! Yes, I really made it. I can sing and play the guitar. I was never lonely. I used to sing on the branches of our guava tree. And there, I let myself out, singing at the top of my voice. It was like being one with your guitar and music. I felt really great.

Years have passed and I realized that our guava tree is dying. Her leaves have withered and the fruits are turning brown. Gone are the buzzing bees hovering over her flowers. The birds peeking on her ripe fruits just passed by, not even saying thank you for the sweet fruits she had once tasted. The saddest thing, not only the guava tree is dying, but my dream.

As I entered Junior High School, I was becoming more busy each day. I was involved in poster-making competitions. I expressed myself to more colourful work. Then, it hit me. No matter how many times I won those poster-making contests, I’m still not a winner after all. I completely lost. I allow myself to dream of something far beyond reality; worst of all,  I conditioned myself that I can be someone I cannot.
I should have controlled myself. Yes, dreaming big is not a  mortal sin. It is our dream that defines us in the future. We do things today because we knew that someday we can be what we want. But sometimes, dreaming is just a figment of our imagination, no more, no less. We dream of becoming a celebrity, a famous speaker, an astronaut, a mathematics genius, and even being the president. That’s why it is called dream because when the clock alarms, you’ll wake up from those fantasies.
Now, I realized that I wanted to play the guitar because I love playing and singing. It is my passion. I can express my emotions through the lyrics and chords. I can never be lonely. My guitar will always keep my company. Secondly, I love to draw and colour pictures. I’m not doing this to become famous or be rewarded, but because I want to express my thoughts and emotions through colourful art.

Prizes received during competitions are just tangible things. Yes, they made me happy; people recognized my work, but it's the feeling of being able to play my favourite song or being able to express my ideas that makes me one of the happiest people in the world.

The Learning Environment

Delivering a report in front of the class is not easy, most especially when you’re not ready. It is really important to study beforehand, think about the possible questions your classmates might ask, and formulate ahead questions you will be throwing at them.

This is my cheat sheet while I was having my report about the learning environment. It is sort of a semi-detailed lesson plan.

Okay, we have already discussed about the roles of the teacher and the learner.  Now, we proceed to out next topic, the learning environment.

I have here some chocolates that I am willing to share to those who will participate in the class discussion. In your own understanding what is a learning environment?

Thank you very much. Based on Mr/Ms. Iiea of a learning environment:

Is a church a learning environment?

Yes. Because we learn a lot of things while listening to the priest or the pastor.

Is an internet cafe a learning environment?

Of course! When we use ICT tools such as the Internet, we gain knowledge of a lot of topics. If you visit a culinary website, you will know the process of cooking a specific recipe. If you go to a health-related website, you learn simple home remedies. When you entered a tech website, you will access information about the latest models of gadgets.
The information is limitless, and knowledge in the Internet is infinite.   Everywhere is a learning environment.  Any place can be a learning environment.

·         This is true when we talk about informal learning.

I        Informal learning means you gain knowledge of something in an unofficial, unscheduled, and unplanned manner.  You just learned it at the very moment a variety of knowledge, issues, problems, and anything under the sun.

For example, you’re riding a motorcycle. A few meters ahead, there’s an accident. The road is blocked, so at that moment, you learn that gruesome news. A vehicular accident has occurred. You take a detour to reach your destination.    But when we talk about formal learning.

Formal learning is obviously the opposite of informal learning.
o   It is a form of learning normally delivered by trained teachers in a systematic intentional way within a school, academy/college/institute, or university.
o   Structured, there is a course outline, and a course description. The teacher has a lesson plan; therefore, it is planned.

In the case of formal learning, the learning environment refers to the combination of the social, intellectual, and physical attributes of a classroom experience.  It is the product of the interaction and relationship between the teacher and the student, and among the students.

Is a conducive learning environment noise-free? Why?

1.    Psychological climate or psychological atmosphere in the classroom. In addition to a favorable physical environment, a favorable school climate must also include:

a.      Safety
                                                              i.      Rules and norms
                                                            ii.      Physical safety
Despite of the strong rain, the students and teacher felt secure that the building can stand against bad weather.
iii.      Social and emotional safety: everyone trust each other

b.      Relationships
                                                              i.      Respect for diversity: Understanding that everyone is unique and we have our differences. In a classroom of 40 to 50 students. It’s a big class. You have to consider that there are students from poor family, rich upbringing, beautiful, not physically gifted, others are talented in singing, dancing.

ii.      School  connectedness/engagement: degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism of the students to participate in classroom discussion.

iii.      Social support of adults and students: feeling that you are cared for, the assistance that you received from the teacher, students and peers.

c.       Teaching and learning process

If I am surrounded by bullies in class, does that mean that automatically I will be a bully, too? Why?

Pine and Horne described a facilitative learning environment:

1.    Encourages people to be active: If everything is smooth and perfect, the students will have the eager minds and ears to learn and listen.

2.    Promotes and facilitates the individuals discovery of the personal meaning of idea:
o   One’s awareness to formulate meaning of one’s own experiences.
o   The teacher does not impose meaning.
o    It is the student’s part to understand and comprehend.

3.    Which emphasizes the uniquely personal and subjective nature of learning: every learner is unique.

4.    In which difference is good and desirable. There is respect for diversity. It is okay to be different.

5.    Which consistently recognizes people’s right to make mistakes:
o   There is no right or wrong answer.
o    Students are at ease to share their ideas.
o   Students learn best when they make mistakes.
o   They are not afraid to make mistakes because committing error or mistake is part or learning.

6.    Which tolerates ambiguity: Staying in uncertainty or not knowing the answer. Openness to ideas. No one is judgmental of what you say.
7.    In which evaluation is a cooperative process with emphasis on self-evaluation.
o   In a facilitative learning environment, there is not competition among the students.
o   The whole group is evaluated, not the individual student. E.g., the whole class passed the exam, only half of the students, or a percentage.

8.    Which encourages openness if self rather than concealment of self:
o   People feel at ease.
o    Students are able to share their feelings, thoughts, and ideas.  In other words, there is transparency. Everyone is welcome.

9.    In which people are encouraged to trust in themselves as well as in external sources: There is strong social support. So it is not difficult to trust others.

10. In which people feel they are respected: In a facilitative learning environment, everyone knows their own value/worth, so it is easy to give respect to everyone. We give high regard to everyone.

11. In which people feel they are accepted:
o   There is a sense of belongingness. Everyone is equal. You know it within yourself that they are part of the group.

12.  Which permits confrontation: Since learners feel at ease and feel that they are accepted, they are not afraid to confront or give feedback and constructive criticisms to other students.

13. A conducive learning environment is necessary in the full development of the cognitive and appetitive faculties of the learner: development of his senses, instincts, imagination, memory, feelings, emotions and will.

What do you mean by a “child-friendly school?

A school is considered a child-friendly if it provides an environment that is safe, clean, healthy, and protective of children.

Passion de Guitarra

The moment I gazed upon a guitar, my world was turned upside down. My mind was blown away by its beauty, like a singer turned into a dancer, sugar becoming salt, and black turning white. I was on fire! When a single chord is struck and rings into my eardrum, it feels like I’m in another dimension in a snap, a single snap that changes my thoughts, actions, and my personality, turning my simple life into something extremely extraordinary.

This life-changing event happened during my childhood years. As young as I was, people expect me to do what a child normally does, but my heart and mind was already captured not by childish play, but passion for music.

Every moment I spent with my guitar is as clear as ice in my mind. I can even remember that instance when I was playing with my kitchen set in our living room. I was into that game of pretend, pretending I was a little chef, but as I look up, there hanging at the corner was an old guitar. I didn't even mind it all! Why? Because I thought that I'm too young to play it, my fingers were too little, and it might be heavy to carry. But when my father unhook it from that pointy nail from the wall and started playing with the strings, I knew for sure that playing guitar is what I will like most.

Time passed by so fast, seeds grown into trees and flowers into fruits, as I was into an adolescent. That old guitar has been broken, mended, painted, and played. No matter how old it is, the melody that flew in the air is as sweet as honey and pure as gold. My fingers had been swollen, fingernails chipped, and finger pads callused, but the more I endured those pain, the better I have become.

I almost wanted to give up. Picking those strings is not an easy game. I cannot reach the fret board especially in fretted chords. My fingers were sore and painful when I forced my fingers to hold the strings to go beyond what I can do. Despite the pain, I’m still triumphant!

Those hurdles I encountered are challenges that all guitarists had also experienced. A guitarist can't be a guitarist when he/she doesn't experience those things, for you cannot taste the sweetness of success if you cannot experience the bitterness of sacrifice. In other words, you cannot hear the sweetness of a guitar’s melody if you haven’t experience a callused finger.

Here’s a simple lesson I learned from playing guitar. I called it “WAN”: widen your patience, always, as in always, trust in yourself, and never ever, ever lose hope. Learning how to play a guitar is not a joke. It requires a lot of patience, time, and effort.

Learning is fun, right? And I do believe that playing is also the best part in all things. It is the most special and awesome scene of all the stresses and stumbling blocks I have—the part where I can play it wholeheartedly. Playing the guitar without pausing and free of worry and confusion of the chords as the rhythm transitions is a real and actual achievement. The first time I plucked my G-chord is the moment of truth that I have been waiting. G-D-Em-C are the four noble chords that made my guitar’s history outstanding and remarkably unique.

Bakit Ba, in English Why, is a song by the Filipino band Siakol in the year 1994. It is the first song that I actually learned to play. I learned that song from my brother who is a fan of their music, and I was influenced by him. Some people said that song doesn't fit my personality. Bakit ba for them is not a song, but merely a nuisance. For me, music is something that needs to be appreciated, or should I say, something we should appreciate. If they do not appreciate that song, then I do. If others cannot, someone will.

Sangue is my guitar’s name. It means blood in Italian language. I baptized my guitar with this very unique name because in entering the world of strings, you have to first undergo bloody obstacles of finger pads swelling and bleeding. If exercise is for the body, reading is for the mind, then my guitar is my sangue, my blood.

Agrinnovate: Revolutionizing Agricultural Outlook for Sustainable Growth

Speech Choir Piece

This is a speech choir piece I composed for my sister's class for the Science Week.

All:       Agrinnovate: Revolutionizing Agricultural Outlook for Sustainable Growth
(pause)
All:        The Philippines is always and forever an agricultural country. We plant our own food, grow fruits and vegetables, and lavish with our own agricultural products.

B :           Victoriously, we ranked 8th largest rice producer in the world.

G:           The world’s 3rd   largest producer of pineapples.

B :           We had an increasing growth for coconut production and even surpassed other Asian countries.

G :          We are 9th largest sugar producer in the world!

All :      We were there! We were at the top!  We don’t have to worry about food.  We had the fertile soil to produce our own food!

B:           But what happened now? Many of our fellowmen are suffering from hunger. Children are getting malnourished.

G (solo): I am hungry mama.

G (solo, mama): I have no rice to cook.  There is no food in the table.

B (solo, farmer): The crops are destroyed by insects and parasites.

B (solo farmer):  Farmlands and rice fields are dry.

All:   Overall crop production is low. There isn’t enough food for all of us. What happened to our soil? What can you do? How can you help to solve our current situation? Do we have to rely on our president alone? We focused too much on drugs and criminalities, but what about our food? We cannot survive without food in our stomach.  How can we cultivate our soil to produce fresh fruits and vegetables? How can we maintain or even surpassed those numbers back?
(pause)
All:        Agrinnovate!
B (solo):  Use modern technology and equipment to monitor growth of our crops.
G (solo): I will start my vegetable garden.
G (solo): I will organize a youth organization to disseminate accurate information to farmers.
B (solo):  I will take up Agri business for my college degree.
B (solo): I will help in my father’s piggery and poultry business.
B (solo): I will use my time to research recent methods in tilapia production.

B:            No more DOTA, no more Clash of Clans, and no more Minecraft!

G:           We have to rekindle our interest in agriculture. This is an important sector that brings food to our tables.

All:        Survivors are Filipinos. The wrath of nature and cruel destiny may steal our crops from us.

B:           Destroy our palays and corns.

G:           But we never have to give up.

B:            For we have all the resources and brilliant minds to stand the test of time. The spirit to survive and to bounce back.

All:        Filipinos unite in the midst of crisis, regardless of socio-economic status, tradition, and belief.

G:           The world has seen the noble spirit of the Filipinos in our most difficult times.

ALL:       The gap between the rich and the poor was narrowed.

G (solo): Laziness was replaced by hard work.

G (solo): Disgust for tilling our soil was conquered by love for farming.

B (solo): Obsession for computer games by the youth was set aside and replaced with interest in agribusiness.

B:            Having fresh fruits and vegetables in ones table is the ultimate desire.

All:         History tells us that we have staggering production of our basic commodities, but we shall always strive to produce in all odds.

B:            We may be haunted by the horrible scenes of landslides, flash floods, and drought around us. But certainly, we will be strengthened by our unwavering faith in God and the industrious hands of our farmers.

B (solo): I believe that the youth, divided by varied beliefs and cultures, are capable to be on top of any situation, if united. We are the hope and sword of our nation. Let us bring back the glory and lush in our fields. Plant trees and crops, so we will never be hungry again.

All :         Together, we can face any challenges ahead of us.

B :          We may stumble and fall.

All :         But we will bounce back, minds stronger with vision, faith, and hope.
